Utah's 3,000-voice Hallelujah! The unofficial kick-off to the holiday season. Join us as the entire Abravanel Hall audience becomes the choir for Handel's Messiah. Bring your family (and your score) so you can sing along.

  • Artist Profile:

    Tenor Andrew Penning, native of St. Paul, Minnesota, holds the degrees of Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Cincinnati: College Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Lawrence University.   In past summers he has been a young artist at Tanglewood Music Center, CCM Spoleto, and Seagle Music Colony. Recently he performed the roles of the Male Chorus in Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, The Chevalier in Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Monsieur Lacouf in Les Mamelles de Tiresias. In the first year of his Utah Opera residency, Andrew sang the roles of Borsa in Rigoletto and the Ballad Singer in Of Mice and Men.  This season he will sing the roles of Ruiz in Il Trovatore and The 1st Armored Man and 2nd Priest in The Magic Flute.

    Soprano Amy Owens, a native of Brookfield, Wisconsin, has performed throughout North America and Europe in theater and recital settings. Operatic roles include Adele (Die Fledermaus), Despina (Cosi fan tutte), Drusilla (Il Coronazione di Poppea), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), and Olympia (Les contes d'Hoffmann). She has performed as a studio artist with Wolf Trap Opera, Central City Opera and Utah Festival Opera. She earned a Master’s in Music from Rice University and bachelor’s from Brigham Young University.  As a Utah Opera Resident Artist, she will sing First Lady in The Magic Flute and cover Rosalba in Florencia en el Amazonas.

    Born in Mexico City, Mezzo-soprano Sishel Claverie is an Alumna of S.I.V.A.M., Mexico’s most prestigious Young Artist Program. Sishel holds a Master's degree in music from Rice University. Her operatic roles include Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos, the title role in Chérubin, Dorabella in Così fan tutte, and Meg in Little Women. Sishel has been a Studio Artist at Wolf Trap and at Renata Scotto Opera Studio in Rome, Italy. She was a member of Houston Grand Opera’s outreach program, Opera to Go! With Utah Opera this season, Sishel will sing the roles of Ines in Il Trovatore, the Second Lady in The Magic Flute and Berta in The Barber of Seville.

    Baritone Shea Owens, from Scottsdale, Arizona, is delighted to be a resident artist with Utah Opera this year. He will be featured as Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia and will cover Rio Lobo in Florencia en el Amazonas. Mr. Owens has performed throughout the United States and abroad, with appearances at the Tanglewood Music Center, Wolf Trap Opera, Central City Opera, The Stephen R. Covey Center for the Arts, the Austro-American Institute in Vienna, Austria, and the Michelangelo Institute in Florence, Italy. His repertoire includes a variety of operatic roles, art songs, and chamber works, including Mozart's Don Giovanni as well as Papageno in The Magic Flute and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, various cantatas by J.S. Bach, Arias and Barcarolles by Leonard Bernstein, and various folk hymns and spirituals.

    Mr. Owens received his bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from Brigham Young University, and his master's degree in Vocal Performance from Rice University. He also enjoys teaching, dancing, and performing with his wife, soprano Amy Owens.
