2019-20 Hispanic Heritage Celebration

by Kathleen Sykes

This year, we’re paying an homage to Hispanic Heritage in three concerts you won’t want to miss. On September 16, Mexico’s Independence Day, we’ll be celebrating with some of the greatest works by Latin-American composers like Moncayo’s Huapango and Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2. Mexican guest conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto will make his debut with us for this special performance.

Prieto joins us again on our Masterworks program on November 8th and 9th which explores Afro-Cuban religious culture and the folk traditions of old Spain with Revueltas’ “Sensemayá” and Falla’s “Three-Cornered Hat” on the same program with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

What better way to celebrate than with a movie? This season, we’re presenting Disney in Concert: Coco, a family friendly, live-to-picture performance. Audience members will follow the story of 12-year-old Miguel who travels to the Land of the Dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family.
