OVERVIEW
As January brings a frosty embrace, Tchaikovsky’s “Winter Dreams” Symphony delights with its exploration of the season’s enchanting beauty—and the 26-year-old composer’s budding talents. Written early in his career, this work hints at the iconic style that would go on to define Tchaikovsky’s masterpieces.
Based on a short story, Rachmaninoff’s The Rock evokes the meaningful chance meeting of a lonely older man and a young woman on a stormy night. From there, we glide into Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, where returning guest pianist Awadagin Pratt expertly showcases the piece’s emotional interplay by balancing lighthearted bliss with moments of deep introspection.
