OVERVIEW
Arguably his most beloved early work for virtuosos, Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto captures the composer at his most energetic and brilliant—already steeped in fame and fortune, ready to conquer Vienna with his jaw-dropping abilities at the keyboard. The virtuoso to take on the task? Yekwon Sunwoo, the record-holder for first-place competition wins by a Korean pianist.
Beethoven’s swift but dramatic Overture to Egmont opens the program, and the emotional intensity is echoed in a heroic, yearning, and quintessential performance of Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, considered a bright breakthrough in an otherwise anxious and nerve-wracking period late in the composer’s life.
