OVERVIEW
To hear both Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto and Saint-Saëns’ “Organ” Symphony in a single evening will leave you awe-struck and enthralled. Be swept away with each tender and deeply human movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto—and in Saint-Saëns best loved and most unique symphony, the blissful, thunderous, thrilling moment when the organ first enters. Used to heartwarming effect in the movie Babe, the triumphant melody in the “Organ” Symphony’s finale has entered our collective consciousness as a representation of whimsy and innocence.
L’ubica Čekovská’s Toy Procession opens this program with childlike wonder. As the composer puts it, “This ability to be amazed—full of joy, with wide-open eyes in the here and now—is something which children have and which we must learn again.”
