OVERVIEW

“Blessed are they who bear suffering… They that sow in tears shall reap in joy”—lines from the opening movement of Brahms’ Requiem draw listeners into a sacred, powerful, and deeply human masterpiece. Music Director Designate Markus Poschner, celebrated for his compelling Brahms interpretations, moves heaven and earth in this monumental work for choir and orchestra.

Brass fans, rejoice! Nico Mulhy’s Doom Painting was written for the world-renowned trumpet soloist (and the evening’s special guest) Tine Thing Helseth. Premiering in 2024 under Markus Poschner, the work engages with the metaphysical history of trumpets in the Bible, from jubilation and celebration to the solemnity of the Last Judgment. The trumpet also weaves through Ives’ The Unanswered Question, posing the “question” as the orchestra attempts to resolve—erratic and elusive as its responses may be.
