A Magical Concert | Un Concierto Mágico

Mickey Mouse

Mickey performing with the Utah Symphony

Friday, August 1st was one of those times when I felt like a boy again thanks to the Utah Symphony and Disney (and after having lost most of my hair, and having what little is left full of gray, I’m especially grateful).
During the concert the orchestra and soloists performed pieces from films like Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog, and Mulan among others. But there were three moments that really captivated me:

Moment # 1: The soloists and the orchestra performed “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid and I could not help myself, so I started singing the chorus with my wife. Needless to say, my neighbors threw me looks as if asking “What’s wrong with this guy?” while my wife rolled her eyes (the price of marrying a baritone).
Moment # 2: The screens showed the scene from Sleeping Beauty in which the prince is released and ends up fighting the Maleficent Black Dragon, all accompanied with live music by the Utah Symphony. I found myself throwing my fists in the air every time maestro Steichen signaled a forte and when the prince waved his sword. It was like watching a MMA fight, but with live orchestra background. That was cool.

Moment # 3: The instant snowflakes appeared on screen, the audience roared. The audience knew that the songs from Frozen had finally arrived. That was mesmerizing: my 5 along with 95.73% of the public sang the songs by heart, and my 2 year old girl, along with the other 4.27%  babbled it (including myself). At the time the Latina singer Arielle Jacobs began to sing the notes of “Let it Go” my girls began to dance, the rest of the girls in the audience were swaying their bodies as they sang,  eyes were closed in fervor, hands were moving like metronomes in the air . I was witnessing a trance, mass hallucination.
The music was not only touching, but well-executed. My sources told me that the band could only rehearse the concert once, only a few hours before the show. In all honesty, the soloists, Conductor Jerry Steichen and the Utah Symphony (these guys are good, really good!) excelled. All that and more surrounded by mountains, with a sunset background, and with the moon and stars above us in the end. The evening was, in one word: Magic.
