He might not have been an Avenger, but Strauss’ subtly autobiographical portrait could be the theme music of any hero.

Berlioz wrote his tribute to Shakespeare’s tragic anti-hero King Lear after nearly becoming one himself when he planned revenge on the fiancé that broke his heart.
International flute superstar Emmanuel Pahud returns and performs Philippe Manoury’s Sacaddes, which captures the “jerks” and “jolts” of tension between the soloist and orchestra.
Strauss never fully admitted to being the star of his own show with Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life), insisting instead that it was a “more general and free ideal of great and manly heroism.”

Estimated concert length: 2 hours (including a 20 minute intermission)

BERLIOZ: King Lear Overture
PHILIPPE MANOURY: Saccades (U.S. Premiere)
R. STRAUSS: Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life)

Thierry Fischer, conductor
Emmanuel Pahud, flute
